Two Capitals of Georgia

Mtskheta is an ancient capital of Georgia. The whole town is included UNECO List of World Heritage Sites.

 

 

Jvari monastery is situated away from Tbilisi. In the 4th century, after Christianity became national religion of Georgia, king Mirian put a wooden cross on the mountain, on which modern monastery is located. The modern church was built at the end of the 6th century and the wooden cross from the 4th century is in the center of the church. Jvari monastery is included in UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites.

 

 

 

Svetitskhoveli cathedral is located in the center of ancient capital of Georgia – Mtskheta. It is distanced form Tbilisi with 20 kilometers. The cathedral was built in the 11th century. A part of Jesus Christ’s shirt and a mantle of saint prophet Elia  are buried in Svetitskhoveli cathedral. Because of the importance of Svetitskhoveli cathedral there are graves of many Georgian Kings. Svetitskhoveli cathedral  is included in UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites.

 

 

 

Samtavro monastery is located in Mtskheta. The church was built in the 11th century. In the yard of the monastery there is a Berry bush, where saint Nino use to pray, when she was preaching Christianity. Samtavro monastery is included in UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites.

 

 

Armazi fortress is located 3 kilometers west from Mtskheta. It includes ruins of castle and a church, both dated around 13th-15th centuries. There use to be ancient Georgian idol named Armazi. Armazi idol was made central idol by the first Georgian king Farnavaz. All people could pray to their own idols, but once a year they had to come to Armazi idol and pray.

Sameba Cathedral is located in Avlabari, on Elia hill. “Sameba” means “Holly Trinity” in Georgian. The Temple was built in 1995-2004. It’s the biggest church in Georgia. It has three entrances. besides the central church the temple includes small churches and another church on the second floor of basement. There is a beautiful view from the yard of Sameba Cathedral.

 

 

Metekhi church is located in the old part of Tbilisi. The Church built in the 6th century. There is a beautiful view on the old town from the yard of Metekhi church.

 

 

 

Sioni cathedral was built in the 7th century. In Sioni church there is a cross, which was made by Saint Nino with twigs of grape tree and her own hair.

 

 

 

Narikala fortress was surrounding Tbilisi and protecting it from invasions. The fortress is dated around the 4th century. A church was built in the 13th century. There is a breathtaking view of the whole town from Narikala fortress.
